DEVELOPING LEADERSHIP SKILLS PART 1: WHAT TYPE OF LEADER ARE YOU?

Leadership is both a talent and a skill. 

(Why we think we have what it takes to write about leadership, and why we are writing about leadership:  First, both Anne and Paul went to the very top of Scouting in their youth, both in rank and in leadership training and positions.  In addition they were part of and later the head of their College Fraternities - yes Anne's Fraternity was a fraternity not a sorority - Alpha Phi. Both graduated from undergraduate college with liberal arts Bachelors degrees at least, from Denison University, which prides itself in preparing leaders.  They have run two successful businesses, the current one being Martial Arts.  They have both served as the top dog in many Masonic Organizations as well.  Paul is a graduate of Culver Academies as a cadet officer, and is the recipient of years of ROTC leadership training. In addition, they both teach karate for over 20 years and Sunday school for well over 15 years.  In all that time, every leadership course they have read, taken or watch, nobody actually did much beyond pontificate about their own lives.  If they did more, it was from a purely personal perspective.  We searched for decades for a how to hands on leadership program that was both effective and followed the basic moral structure they live their lives by.  It's hard to do something you don't ethically believe in.  Since they found nothing, they created one.  This is 12 months of that program.  We hope you enjoy it.  It's free. A talent or gift is something you are born with.  You don't have to like it, but some people are born leaders.  Some people have innate leadership ability, a natural predisposition to be a leader.



A skill is something you can develop by study, working with other leaders and by being taught. Anyone can develop leadership skills. 

Naturally, if you are both a natural leader, and you work hard at developing you talent and skills as a leader, you will find leadership easier than most.  However, the world is NOT full of people who work hard at anything.  Effort and Skill normally rule the day.

What type of Leader Are You?

It is far easier to be an effective leader if you know what your talents and skills are now. In addition, it is easier to develop and notice these things in others if you know what you are looking for.


What follows is a basic aptitude index or test to help you or your students to find out what type of leadership skill they already have. These are the 10 basic leadership skills the following lesson plans will help you develop, or help you teach your students or staff.  They will be released by the 15 of each month.

When you answer these questions, remember there is no good, better or best; just an index of what type of leader you are.  It is always better to work within you skills than outside of them, but to do so, you need to know what they are.1) Are you a Goal Setter or a Problem Solver (not interpersonal problems but tasks or situational problems) ? 

2) Do you enjoy solving problems more or helping others solve problems more (teacher or performer)?
3) Do you want recognition for achieving an end, or are you happier just achieving the end? (Dependent or Independent)

4) Are you a relationship manager? (Are you good at pulling anger or frustration away from others?)
5) Are you a foreground (people see you always leading) or a background (no one sees you leading) leader?
6) Are you sensitive to people’s emotions, and do you change your approach to suit their emotional make up? (Empathy Teacher.)

7) Are you a rules follower or a purpose follower?
8) Are you a loud leader or a quiet leader?
9) Are you a natural leader or a skilled leader or both? 

10) Do you need to know the end result before you start, or are you comfortable changing in route?

The last exercise will help you dial into specifically what type of leader you really are.  Take a moment to write down the name of a leader that you have personal experience with, not one you have read about, but rather someone you have worked with.  Write down what you think their answers to the above questions might be.  Once you have done this, you should notice that this leader shares many of your skills. We all tend to notice things we understand and appreciate in others, and not notice things that we are unfamiliar with.
